The castle and gardens are now part of public life and there is plenty to discover here.

It was a gift of love that Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had built for his Salome Alt. In 1606 Altenau Castle was built and it also fulfilled its purpose: 15 children were given to the couple, ten of whom remained alive. After the death of Wolf Dietrich, the castle was renamed "Mirabell" by his successor Markus Sitticus von Hohenems.

The Castle: a single treasure
From 1721 to 1727, Prince Archbishop Franz Anton Prince von Harrach had Mirabell Palace generously rebuilt by the well-known baroque master builder Lukas von Hildebrandt and combined into a closed complex. The great fire in the town on 30 April 1818 severely damaged the castle; among other things, the frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr and Gaetano Fanti fell victim to the flames. The large marble staircase leading to the castle and the marble hall remained intact.
Peter de Nobile, court architect and director of the School of Architecture in Vienna, gave Mirabell Castle its present, rather sober appearance. Details such as window frames, capitals and stucco remind us of the splendour of bygone times. The staircase of master Lukas von Hildebrandt is one of the greatest treasures of Mirabell Palace. Graceful putti adorn the multifaceted marble balustrade, the sculptures in the niches are masterpieces of the famous Georg Raphael Donner and belong to the most beautiful creations of the European Baroque.

The Mirabelle Garden
The famous garden of Mirabell Palace was redesigned around 1690 by Prince Archbishop Johann Ernst Graf von Thun according to plans by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and substantially altered around 1730 by Franz Anton Danreiter. The Pegasus Fountain, a work by Kaspar Gras from Innsbruck, was erected in 1913. The four groups of figures around the fountain were created by Ottavio Mosto (1690) and symbolize the four elements: Fire, air, earth and water.

In the western part of the Mirabell Garden is the Heckentheater, which - built between 1704 and 1718 - is one of the oldest Heckentheater north of the Alps.

The Zwerglgarten dates back to the time of Archbishop Franz Anton Prince Harrach.

The Mirabell Garden was opened to the public by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1854 and has remained a garden architectural gem and popular photographic motif to this day.

Mirabell Castle Today
Today, Mirabell Palace houses the offices of the Mayor of Salzburg and the city administration. The Marmorsaal, the former festival hall of the prince archbishop, in which father Leopold Mozart and his children Wolfgang and Nannerl already played, is today regarded as one of the "most beautiful wedding halls in the world". Conferences, honours and atmospheric concerts (Salzburg castle concerts) take place here regularly.
