Church St. Johann

The Romanesque church of St. Johann in Prato allo Stelvio is a historical jewel in the midst of the picturesque landscape of the Val Venosta Valley. It was built in the 12th century and is a remarkable example of the Romanesque architecture of this period.

The Church St. Johann is characterised by its simple elegance and solid construction. It is made of robust quarry stone masonry, which gives it an imposing and timeless appearance. The church was built in the late Romanesque style and is characterised by typical Romanesque-Byzantine elements such as the semicircular arch and the round cylindrical column with cube capital. This style found its beginning in the pre-Romanesque-Carolingian art that emerged in the 8th century and spread throughout Europe around 1100.

The church of St. Johann was originally built as a "private church" for the lords of Tschenglsburg. All subsequent Tschenglsburg families had patronage over this church and were also buried there.

The Church of St. Johann is now one of the most important religious and cultural monuments in the Val Venosta Valley, transporting numerous visitors back in time and giving them an insight into Romanesque architecture and art.
