- Stručný opis
This stage goes uphill and downhill through chestnut woods and across old pasture land, and finally reaches Castelmonte, a pilgrimage destination with a shrine to the Virgin Mary. From here the trail leads steadily downhill into the town of Cividale del Friuli. The route is suitable for everyone, especially culture lovers, and presents no technical difficulties, but it should not be underestimated as it takes around six hours.
Tribil Superiore (Gemeinde Stregna)
- Najlepšia sezóna (ročné obdobie)
The first part of the route leads via an old connecting path between the plain and the mountain villages of the municipalities of Stregna and Drenchia. It crosses old pasture land and chestnut woods, and passes fortifications from the time of the First World War. Then the valley starts to open out, and from the medieval pilgrimage town of Castelmonte, the oldest shrine in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, there is an open view of the Friulian lowlands. The well preserved sanctuary is one of the most magnificent churches of the former patriarchy of Aquileia. Apart from a visit to the church, another special attraction is the pilgrimage in honour of the Virgin Mary which leads here every year in September from Cividale. Cividale del Friuli was one of the most important settlements of the Lombard Kingdom in Italy. There is also much evidence of the Roman period before this, and of the time of the patriarchy of Aquileia afterwards. Cividale also has many museums and churches and forms part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. A very special event which takes place annually in the first two weeks of July is the Mittelfest – a moment when Central European art and culture comes together. Numerous restaurants offer regional specialities, and there are also many agritourism businesses and vineyards around the town. The Palio di San Donato (on the last Sunday in August) and the entrance of the patriarch into the town (first Sunday in January) are two of the most important historical festivals in Cividale.
All geared up for a somewhat more strenuous stage which will involve walking for around six hours, we start from Tribil Superiore. Trail no. 747 leads us through the villages of Cinaz (Klinaz) and Varch (Varh), until we finally reach the ascent to the Monte San Giovanni. From there we continue towards the village of Covacevizza (Kovaceuca) and the little church of San Nicolò and to Castelmonte, where also the route of the “Alta Via delle Valli del Natisone” begins. From this place of pilgrimage we briefly follow the course of the SP31 up to 489 metres above sea level (hamlet of Moldiaria). We turn off to the right and hike along the vehicle track into the village of Purgessimo. From there we walk on Via Ugo Foscolo, then Strada del Mulino, Strada della Lesa and finally Via del Paradiso reaching Cividale del Friuli, where we reward ourselves with some culture in one of the many museums and with regional specialities in one of the agritourism businesses.
