Centuries of history

The minnesinger Ulrich of Liechtenstein built the first castle in Murau around 1232. In the uprising against the sovereign King Přemysl Ottokar II of Bohemia, the castle was destroyed in 1268 and rebuilt soon after by Ulrich's son, Otto II of Liechtenstein. In the 17th century Georg Ludwig Graf zu Schwarzenberg had the old Liechtenstein castle demolished. The castle he built in its place is today owned by the Princely Schwarzenberg Family Foundation.

A part of the castle is open for tours. During the guided tour of the Knights' Hall, Cat Hall, Iron Hall, Exhibition Room, Castle Kitchen, Castle Chapel and Dungeon, visitors learn many interesting facts about the family and property history of the Princely House of Schwarzenberg. A visit to Murau Castle is an absolute must.
