Arguably the most romantic street in Switzerland, the Brunngasse in the oldest part of the village is famous beyond the country's borders and was once awarded the title of "most beautiful street in Europe". Most of the wooden chalets date back to the 18th century and are inscribed with woodcarvings. The denizens from Brienz know about the especialness of her alley. All season they decorate the houses splendiferous suited to the occasion. The Oberdorfstrasse used to be the village's main thoroughfare and had many shops. Witnesses of bygone times can still be seen along the way. "Am Bort" describes the area by the Protestant church, which houses a cluster of beautiful historic wooden chalets. Some of them still have small woodcarving workshops.
